Have you heard about the Ma thèse en 180 secondes Competition? This ACFAS-sponsored event, which INRS participates in, has existed for a number of years. It gives doctoral students an opportunity to present their research projects in three minutes, in French. The Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS) runs the same contest in English. It’s called the Canadian 3-Minute Thesis competition.
INRS wants to give its students the opportunity to take part in the competition this year.
Participants must distil the complexities of their research project into an interesting and accessible summary, using a single static slide and no accessories. The conditions of eligibility are as follows: be registered in an active master's or doctorate program (with thesis). Competitors who are eligible on the day of their first presentation in a local competition will remain eligible for the 3MT Canada competition, regardless of any subsequent changes to their status.
Rules
The institutional final will be held in Quebec City on Wednesday, March 20, 2019, immediately after the institutional final of the French-language version, Ma Thèse en 180 secondes. The Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Department will reimburse travel expenses for candidates residing in the Greater Montreal Area.
•Students will have 180 seconds to present their master’s or doctoral research subject in English.
•No accessories other than notes are allowed: no laser pointers, no clothing accessories used specifically for the presentation, etc.
•Students are allowed a visual aid, which is strongly recommended but not required.
• Students are allowed to use one single, non-animated PowerPoint slide to illustrate their presentation. The text appearing on the slide must be in English.
• No audio or video aids are allowed.
Costs
The winner of the INRS institution-wide contest will represent our university at the regional finals of the 3MT Canada competition in April 2019 (date to be confirmed), at McGill University, Montreal, and will award $500. INRS will award the first runner-up with a $250 scholarship.
