Location : Institut national de la recherche scientifique – Centre Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications (), 1650 boulevars Lionel-Boulet, Varennes (Québec), J3X 1S2, Canada.
Research area : Laser-matter interactions, plasma physics, optics/photonics, particle acceleration and transport, materials science, nanoscience, cultural heritage.
Project summary : The project is oriented toward the development, optimization and utilization of a laser-driven proton beamline. Laser-driven particle acceleration is a novel field of research, benefitting from the advent of high-power lasers as developed by the Nobel Laureates in Physics 2018. To this end, the student will use the Advanced Laser Light Source (ALLS) 200 TW (1 T=1012) facility located at INRS-EMT. Applications of ion beams can be found in tumor treatment (proton therapy), radioisotope production, proton radiography, catalytic growth of nanocrystals, stress testing of different materials, nuclear fusion, materials science, cultural heritage to name a few

The work to be done encompasses the improvement of the source, design of the beamline and preparation of the beam diagnostics. Furthermore, the work includes utilizing the laser-generated beams for manifold applications. This research will be done in collaboration with other laboratories worldwide such as the LULI (École Polytechnique de Paris, France), the Italian Nuclear Physics Institute (INFN), the university «La Sapienza» in Rome (Italy), le laboratory FORTH in Crete (Greece), the LLNL (Livermore, US), the university LMU in Munich, the university of Lund (Sweden). The application should be open to working in a highly international and multidisciplinary environment. Travel abroad should be envisioned. It is possible to perform the Phd within a dual PhD program with universities in Europe (cotutelle).
