Project description

In this project, highly motivated M.Sc. and/or Ph.D. students will study how light can control and induce novel quantum phases in the condensed matter. In particular, by using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy as the principal technique, we will record how intense and long-wavelength laser pulses can reshape the electronic properties of Dirac-like and layered complex materials on femtosecond timescales. This study will be essential for developing the building blocks of future electro-optical and spintronic devices.

Research Environment

The Advanced Laser Light Source (ALLS) laboratory at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique, Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications Research Centre is a unique user facility for investigating femtosecond dynamics via a variety of ultrafast techniques. Specifically, the next-generation time- and angle-resolved photoemission (TR-ARPES) endstation, headed by Prof. Fabio Boschini, offers direct access to how electrons interact and reorganize in quantum materials on an ultrafast timescale.

Profile

Highly-motivated applicants for an M.Sc. or a Ph.D. should have a degree (B.Sc./M.Sc.) in Physics, Materials Science or Engineering, as well as interest and/or experience and skills in condensed matter physics, ultrafast spectroscopy and quantum materials. They should be able to work independently and with a team, as well as demonstrate critical and independent thinking.

About the picture

Scheme time- and angle-resolved photoemission (TR-ARPES): an intense ultrashort pulse (the pump, red) is used to excite the system under investigation, while a delayed ultraviolet pulse (the probe, blue) photoemites electrons. By detecting the angle of emission and kinetic energy of photoelectrons via an electron analyzer for each pump&probe delay, we gain direct insights into dynamical electronic properties and collective excitations of complex quantum materials.
