Here are some tips by G\u00e9raldine Delb\u00e8s, professor, and Maude Cloutier, doctoral student in biology<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul id=\"block-2e1e3a80-8798-435f-8f34-9c9c43bdd36a\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Read the INRS Harassment, Discrimination, and Incivility Policy (available in our <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/linrs\/gouvernance\/documents-normatifs\/\">normative documents<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take the <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/la-recherche\/developpement-et-valorisation-de-la-recherche\/equite-diversite-et-inclusion\/milieux-inclusifs-diversite-sexuelle-genre\/#formation\">training<\/a> offered by INRS on inclusive and safe environments for gender and sexual diversity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learn the vocabulary related to gender and sexual diversity by reading the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.fondationemergence.org\/lexique\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fondation \u00c9mergence<\/a>\u2019s and <a href=\"https:\/\/alix.interligne.co\/en\/vocabulaire-diversite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Interligne<\/a>\u2019s lexicons.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remind your team and colleagues that there is a zero-tolerance policy for homophobic, lesbophobic, biphobic, and transphobic comments or any other discriminatory acts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learn how to recognize and confront homophobic, lesbophobic, biphobic, and transphobic violence and discrimination using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohsu.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-06\/RAVEN%20approach%20to%20microaggressions.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">R.A.V.E.N. Approach<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not assume the sexual orientation or gender identity of others. You can avoid assumptions by asking open-ended questions, using <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/la-recherche\/developpement-et-valorisation-de-la-recherche\/equite-diversite-et-inclusion\/guide-de-redaction-inclusive\/\">inclusive communication and writing<\/a> (PDF guide, in French only), and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.fondationemergence.org\/lexique\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">avoiding heteronormative and cisnormative stereotypes<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Respect and use your peers\u2019 first names and pronouns and normalize sharing <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/la-recherche\/developpement-et-valorisation-de-la-recherche\/equite-diversite-et-inclusion\/milieux-inclusifs-diversite-sexuelle-genre\/#pronom\">pronouns<\/a> with others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remind people of INRS\u2019s commitment to maintaining inclusive and safe spaces on your webpages and in your official communications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Display the INRS <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/la-recherche\/developpement-et-valorisation-de-la-recherche\/equite-diversite-et-inclusion\/milieux-inclusifs-diversite-sexuelle-genre\/#autocollants\">stickers<\/a> promoting safe and inclusive environments for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities in the places where you work and study<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Celebrate events such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Day_Against_Homophobia,_Transphobia_and_Biphobia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia<\/a>, as well as Pride Month, on your lab\u2019s and research team\u2019s social media accounts and webpages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9437c248 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:55%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-share-inclusive-pronouns\">Why share inclusive pronouns?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One way to create and normalize a space where people can share their pronouns is to start by sharing yours. Sharing pronouns is an important part of respecting everyone\u2019s identity. People with diverse gender identities and gender expressions are not always able to publicly display their identity in their study or work environments, which means that they are often likely to be misgendered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some cases, sharing their pronouns may even lead to negative repercussions. You have options!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Homophobia, transphobia, lesbophobia, and biphobia can negatively affect the academic and work lives of sexually- and gender-diverse people. The consequences of such behaviours are significant: they create an unsafe work environment, increase anxiety, and make people feel unsafe or unwelcome in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Qu\u00e9bec, sections&nbsp;10 and 10.1 of the <a href=\"http:\/\/legisquebec.gouv.qc.ca\/en\/showdoc\/cs\/c-12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms<\/em><\/a> prohibit discrimination and harassment based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No form of incivility, discrimination, or harassment whatsoever should be tolerated.
