This tedious process consists in measuring the weight and size of the tuber\u2014characteristics which are essential for determining the selling price. Still done manually, grading poses consistency and uniformity problems. This results in the selling price often being underestimated, which can cause significant losses for farmers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A member of Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/karem-chokmani\/\">Karem Chokmani<\/a>\u2019s team, INRS master student Corinne Dumais, hopes to remedy the situation. Dumais is currently developing a tool based on artificial intelligence that could automatically grade the most consumed vegetable in Canada. The young research scientist was able to present her project\u2019s results at the Colloque sur la pomme de terre (potato symposium) which took place in L\u00e9vis this month. Her work focuses on a tool that allows for a much faster and more representative grading of crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe application can process a photo with 50&nbsp;potatoes, within 30&nbsp;seconds to a minute. It\u2019s automatic and based on statistics. You can repeat the process with several photos until you get a sample that you consider representative of the crop.\u201d <\/p><cite><strong>Corinne Dumais<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-artificial-intelligence-in-agriculture\"><br><strong><strong>Artificial intelligence in agriculture<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The step following the harvest is long and not necessarily representative. Generally, not all potatoes are graded. The objective is to produce a report on the statistics of the photographed sample.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe end goal would be to develop a functional mobile application that could be used by the agricultural community,\u201d adds Dumais, who is a master student at the E<a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/inrs\/research-centres\/eau-terre-environnement-research-centre\/\">au Terre Environnement Research Centre<\/a> in Quebec City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research team used deep learning. The artificial intelligence software can recognize each potato, then estimate its weight according to its width and length. It\u2019s the most cultivated vegetable in Quebec, and there\u2019s a real need arising from the agricultural community, which invests heavily in this crop.\u201d<\/p><cite>\u2014 <strong>Karem Chokmani<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next step will be to define the differences between the reports obtained by buying groups and those produced by the application. Farmers will then be able to establish whether there is a significant gain. The application will help farmers monitor the quality of their product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover is-light\" style=\"min-height:183px;aspect-ratio:unset;\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-background-dim-100 has-background-dim has-background-gradient\" style=\"background:linear-gradient(135deg,rgb(238,238,238) 100%,rgb(169,184,195) 100%)\"><\/span><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-cover-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:clamp(14px, 0.875rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.482), 18px);\">This project is financed by Maxi-Plant Productions Inc. which is a partner in the development of the application and where it will be tested in operational mode. It also received financial support from the Canadian Potato Council (CPC) and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mitacs.ca\/fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Mitacs
