Yet in many Canadian cities, car use remains predominant. Unless major changes are made to infrastructure and behaviour, cities will struggle to meet the ambitious sustainable transport goals set in response to urban congestion and the climate crisis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A pan-Canadian research team, co-directed by Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/marie-soleil-cloutier\/\">Marie-Soleil Cloutier<\/a>, Director of the Urbanisation Culture Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Research Centre at INRS, received a $3&nbsp;million <a href=\"https:\/\/cihr-irsc.gc.ca\/e\/52389.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Healthy Cities Implementation Science Team Grant<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its goal? Improving population health in urban areas. These funds, provided by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) through the Institute of Population and Public Health, will support the <a href=\"https:\/\/capacity-capacite.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CapaCITY\/\u00c9 project<\/a>. Pedestrian and cyclist travel is currently restricted partly due to concerns about safety and routes\u2019 user-friendliness, as well as elements related to the lack of infrastructure for these modes of transport in our cities.\u201d<\/p><cite>\u2014 <strong>Marie-Soleil Cloutier<\/strong>, Lead co-researcher of CapaCITY\/\u00c9<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:80px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur research will be used to advance the implementation science by studying multiple dimensions of municipal interventions related to sustainable transportation,\u201d adds the health geography and urban studies researcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This announcement is part of a total investment of $27&nbsp;million by the Government of Canada. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sustainable-transport-for-health-and-equity-in-cities\"><strong>Sustainable transport for health and equity in cities &nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CapaCITY\/\u00c9 project, jointly led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfu.ca\/fhs\/about\/people\/profiles\/meghan-winters.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Meghan Winters<\/a> of Simon Fraser University, D<a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.usask.ca\/profiles\/che\/daniel-fuller.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aniel Fuller<\/a> of the University of Saskatchewan, and Marie-Soleil Cloutier at INRS, focuses on two key interventions: All Age and Ability (AAA) bicycling networks, and speed reduction strategies \u2013 used as case studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This project comes at an important time, with the federal government launching its first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infrastructure.gc.ca\/trans\/active-strat-actif-eng.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Active Transportation Strategy<\/a>. Taking into account the many different urban environments across Canada &nbsp;is essential to the success of this project.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project research team will work in partnership with urban planners, community groups and other stakeholders in several Canadian cities (Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Victoria, among others). The project proposes to examine how targeted, city-funded interventions lead to real changes in the urban environment and mobility patterns, as well as improved safety for user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div
