Two specialists in ecotoxicology at INRS are working on several fronts. In the laboratory and the field, Patrice Couture and Val\u00e9rie Langlois are advancing science in terms of biodiversity protection. His research focuses more specifically on the effects of metals from mining on freshwater fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The earth&#8217;s crust is full of them, they are naturally found in our vegetables. Even if the presence of metals in the environment is natural, some build up and become very toxic. These are under the researcher&#8217;s microscope.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is not the presence of metals that is problematic but their concentration. Mines recirculate metals buried in the soil, which creates potentially toxic environments for the flora and fauna around them.\u201d <\/p>\n<cite><strong>Professor Patrice Couture<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the research activities of the researcher and his team take place in the areas of Sudbury, Ontario and Rouyn-Noranda, Qu\u00e9bec, both of which have significant mining and metallurgical activities. These areas are unique natural laboratories for research on copper, cadmium, zinc and nickel, metals that are potentially hazardous to the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the mining industry is taking more precautions than it did 20 years ago, stormwater runoff or poor maintenance of a mine site that is no longer in operation can cause significant environmental damage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Qu\u00e9bec, sustainable mining development is a major issue. The researcher reminds us that the province has a large potential for mineral resources that will be required in the coming decades, especially if governments wish to take an ecological turn with electric cars, LED bulbs, or lithium batteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will have to develop a sustainable and intelligent exploitation of the mining sites if we want to preserve biodiversity, the health of the populations and the traditional way of life of the First Nations,\u201d says Professor Couture, who collaborates with partners from the Indigenous communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given climate change, where heat waves are becoming more and more frequent in northern Qu\u00e9bec, the researcher is also interested in the combination of metal contamination and high temperatures. He is collaborating with other INRS professors, including <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/andre-st-hilaire\/\">Andr\u00e9 Saint-Hilaire<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/normand-bergeron\/\">Normand Bergeron<\/a> on the <a href=\"http:\/\/miranor.inrs.ca\/?lang=en\">MiraNor<\/a> project. Together, they are evaluating the effects of mining activities on fish, and fish habitat near Schefferville and Fermont.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Professor Couture&#8217;s work, the heat adds additional stress to cold-blooded organisms such as fish, in addition to metal pollution. In the laboratory, scientists have observed significant mortality and growth retardation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe combination of several sources of stress can lead to the local extinction of several species. Indigenous communities are highly dependent on certain fish species such as Arctic char. Major impacts on these species and their habitats can have negative consequences for these communities,\u201d says the researcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:80px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover is-light has-parallax is-repeated\" style=\"min-height:400px;aspect-ratio:unset;\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-background-dim-40 has-background-dim\"><\/span><div class=\"wp-block-cover__image-background wp-image-120843 has-parallax is-repeated\" style=\"background-position:68% 45%;background-image:url(https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/ecotoq-INRS-patrice-couture_IMG_20210814_134933621_HDR.jpg)\"><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-cover-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center is-style-default has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"color:#ffffff\" class=\"tadv-color\">The main causes of biodiversity loss are habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, exploitation of natural resources, and invasive species.&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:80px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The power of environmental DNA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the research projects put forward at this COP 15 is the pan-Canadian research project iTrackDNA, which illustrates the collaboration between Indigenous communities and scientists with common objectives: the inventory and protection of Canadian wildlife.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All living organisms leave a trace of their genetic material (or DNA) in their environment (water, soil) via their excrement, scales, urine, saliva, skin, hair, feathers, etc. This is called environmental DNA (or DNA). This is called environmental DNA (or eDNA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is this precious genetic material that is at the heart of the Canada-wide iTrackDNA project co-directed by professor <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/valerie-langlois\/\">Val\u00e9rie Langlois<\/a>, holder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/chaire-de-recherche-du-canada-en-ecotoxicogenomique-et-perturbation-endocrinienne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chaire de recherche du Canada en \u00e9cotoxicog\u00e9nomique et perturbation endocrinienne<\/a> with collaborators from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulaval.ca\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Universit\u00e9 Laval<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/uqo.ca\/english\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec en Outaouais<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Victoria<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This large-scale project aims to preserve and restore biodiversity through eDNA.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA single water sample in a lake or wetland can indicate the presence of species that are at risk, invasive, or culturally and economically important, especially to First Nations. It&#8217;s an extremely powerful tool.\u201d <\/p>\n<cite><strong>Professor Val\u00e9rie Langlois <\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team&#8217;s goal is to develop state-of-the-art molecular technology tools that will detect eDNA for approximately 150 Canadian animal species. To date, they have developed several dozen tests, including for lake sturgeon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized is-style-rounded\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Valerie-Langlois-Team-edited.jpg\" alt=\"Val\u00e9rie Langlois (au centre) avec l'\u00e9quipe de recherche pour le pr\u00e9l\u00e8vement de micro-plastiques dans le Saint-Laurent\" class=\"wp-image-120839\" style=\"width:384px;height:384px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Valerie-Langlois-Team-edited.jpg 768w, https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Valerie-Langlois-Team-edited-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Valerie-Langlois-Team-edited-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key player has just joined the project: the Zoo St-F\u00e9licien. The research team will be able to benefit from access to species, such as wolverines and polar bears, that are difficult to approach in their natural habitat. The idea is to take samples from the animal and its habitat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strengths of eDNA lie in its ability to monitor declining or endangered populations, but also to detect invasive species. The presence or absence of certain species can give an idea of the health of the natural environment under study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe environmental DNA sampling will help answer the question of the members of the Abitibiwinni First Nation, located near Amos, as to whether the cougar still resides on their territory. The cougar is a species likely to be designated as threatened,\u201d explains Professor Langlois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, the researcher points out that eDNA sampling is not done in a standardized way by scientists. The team is currently working on the development of the first international standard to have standardized analysis methods. A more robust and efficient test to broaden its use is also being studied. For now, governments, First Nations, NGOs, and industry are the targeted users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This large-scale project is funded by <a href=\"https:\/\/genomecanada.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genome Canada<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genomequebec.com\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genome Qu\u00e9bec<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/genomecanada.ca\/about\/our-network\/genome-british-columbia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genome British Columbia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A variety of environmental issues under the microscope<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patrice Couture and Val\u00e9rie Langlois&#8217; involvement in environmental issues does not stop there. They are each at the head of two important research groups: the <a href=\"https:\/\/ecotoq.ca\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centre de recherche en \u00e9cotoxicologie du Qu\u00e9bec<\/a> (EcotoQ) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciape-iceda.ca\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centre intersectoriel d&#8217;analyse des perturbateurs endocriniens<\/a> (CIAPE).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EcotoQ brings together some fifty Qu\u00e9bec scientists who document the presence of various contaminants in the environment and study their effects on fauna and flora. Oil spills, the use of pesticides, herbicides, and other contaminants of agricultural origin, microplastics and the presence of metals are some of the issues they are addressing.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A member of EcotoQ, Val\u00e9rie Langlois is also interested in the ecotoxicology of microplastics in the St. Lawrence River by taking samples directly from the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the CIAPE, along with her colleagues, she collects data and informs government authorities and the public about the effects that endocrine disruptors \u2013 including certain pesticides \u2013 can have on the environment and on human health.
