{"id":170999,"date":"2024-08-19T09:31:16","date_gmt":"2024-08-19T13:31:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/?p=170999"},"modified":"2024-08-19T09:35:32","modified_gmt":"2024-08-19T13:35:32","slug":"access-to-education-a-detailed-portrait-of-equal-opportunities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/news\/access-to-education-a-detailed-portrait-of-equal-opportunities\/","title":{"rendered":"Access to Education: A Detailed Portrait of Equal Opportunities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A new report compiles and analyzes data on education in Quebec<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n    \n<div class=\"wp-block full-width-image fixed-height\">\n    <div class=\"image-ctn\">\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/classe_470737019-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"\" \/>\n    <\/div>\n    <p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/xavier-st-denis\/\">Xavier St-Denis<\/a> and postdoctoral researcher V\u00e9ronique Grenier of the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) worked with four other researchers to write the report <a href=\"https:\/\/documentcloud.adobe.com\/spodintegration\/index.html?locale=fr-fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Bulletin de l\u2019\u00e9galit\u00e9 des chances en \u00e9ducation<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Published in August&nbsp;2024 by the <a href=\"https:\/\/observatoiredesinegalites.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Observatoire qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois des in\u00e9galit\u00e9s<\/a>, this document offers a complete overview of Quebec\u2019s situation with regard to education, equal opportunity, and access to education from preschool to university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-background is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-778247b6 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px;background:linear-gradient(135deg,rgb(232,232,232) 1%,rgb(232,232,232) 99%);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Some Highlights<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Kindergarten children born outside of Canada are more at risk of being considered vulnerable than those born in Canada.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In high school, students from second-generation immigrant backgrounds are more likely to obtain a diploma or a qualification than those from first-generation immigrant and non-immigrant backgrounds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In recent decades, the participation rate for post-secondary education has risen sharply in Quebec, particularly at the college level. However, major inequalities in access remain:<br>\u2192 First, more women than men access college and university and graduate.<br>\u2192 Second, young people experience significant disparities in relation to access and graduation within colleges and universities, depending on their parents\u2019 level of education and income.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are persistent disparities in program choices between boys and girls, which can be explained by the gendered division of labour, both at home and at work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>INRS expertise: education and social statistics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professor St-Denis\u2019 research interests include social inequality and mobility, education, and population studies. He is also director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gess.inrs.ca\/en\/homepage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Social Statistics Study Group<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His expertise in social statistics and administrative data analysis was particularly useful for this project. V\u00e9ronique Grenier, <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/news\/veronique-grenier-receives-a-banting-postdoctoral-fellowship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">currently in a Banting postdoctoral fellowship<\/a> under the supervision of Professor St-Denis at the <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/inrs\/research-centres\/urbanisation-culture-societe-research-centre\/\">Urbanisation Culture Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Research Centre<\/a>, specializes in the stratification of access to education in Quebec. She has been a researcher in residence at the Observatoire qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois des in\u00e9galit\u00e9s since December\u00a02023, and contributed to the creation of the report in that capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large is-resized is-style-rounded\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"628\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/veronique-grenier-ucs-bourse-banting-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-171087\" style=\"width:234px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/veronique-grenier-ucs-bourse-banting-edited.jpg 628w, https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/veronique-grenier-ucs-bourse-banting-edited-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/veronique-grenier-ucs-bourse-banting-edited-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI felt that compiling indicators, both historical and recent, relating to pre-school, primary and secondary education would contribute to a better understanding of inequalities in education. What&#8217;s more, in my opinion, bringing together and contextualizing data that has been made public, but which is scattered, makes it easier for players in the world of education and the general population to access.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite><strong>V\u00e9ronique Grenier<\/strong>, Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at INRS<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She is also a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/credef.uqam.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chaire de recherche sur les enjeux de la diversit\u00e9 en \u00e9ducation et en formation<\/a> (CREDEF) at UQAM, and an associate researcher for the <a href=\"https:\/\/crievat.fse.ulaval.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centre de recherche et d\u2019intervention sur l\u2019\u00e9ducation et la vie au travail<\/a> (CRIEVAT) at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulaval.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Universit\u00e9 Laval<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Colleges: democratizing education\u2026 for certain groups only<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since they were formed in 1967, colleges have largely contributed to the democratization of post-secondary education. Within the Quebec population, the graduation rate has increased in the past three decades: according to the report, 7 out of 10&nbsp;students who graduate from high school move on to collegial studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, this new report shows that social background still affects educational trajectories. Although colleges have played an undeniable role in improving access to post-secondary education for the masses in Quebec, nearly 50% of young people who grew up in lower-income families don\u2019t go on to college before the age of 21, as opposed to only 10% for young people from well-off families. This difference leads to large gaps in graduation rates within the same generation, which is a real paradox brought about by the Quebec college model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur report highlights a dual trend within the college system: a role in democratizing education, yet one that does not eliminate educational inequalities in Quebec,\u201d explains Professor St-Denis.&nbsp;\u201cThe report encourages readers to adopt a systemic perspective towards equal opportunities in education. In fact, the report\u2019s data emphasizes the cumulative nature of educational inequalities and the obstacles that children and youth from less privileged family and social backgrounds can face.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the report, more women than men work while at school.
