{"id":175740,"date":"2024-10-24T18:06:25","date_gmt":"2024-10-24T22:06:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/?p=175740"},"modified":"2024-11-21T09:31:10","modified_gmt":"2024-11-21T14:31:10","slug":"inrs-graduates-discovery-honoured-by-the-royal-society-of-chemistry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/news\/inrs-graduates-discovery-honoured-by-the-royal-society-of-chemistry\/","title":{"rendered":"INRS Graduate\u2019s Discovery Honoured by the Royal Society of Chemistry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Maria Dekermenjian\u2019s article was chosen from among the organization\u2019s annual publications. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n    \n<div class=\"wp-block full-width-image fixed-height\">\n    <div class=\"image-ctn\">\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/chimie_42622146.png\" alt=\"\" \/>\n    <\/div>\n    <p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">Maria Dekermenjian, a Ph.D. graduate from the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS), is one of the winners of the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/Content\/ArticleLanding\/2024\/RA\/D4RA90089H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Outstanding Student Paper Awards<\/a>, which are presented annually by the UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Royal Society of Chemistry<\/a>\u2019s <em>RSC Advances<\/em> journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former student was one of 11 international winners chosen from among 700&nbsp;nominations received this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized is-style-rounded\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"872\" height=\"1184\" src=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2020\/02\/Photo_MariaD.jpg\" alt=\"La doctorante Maria Dekermenjian\" class=\"wp-image-1107\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1;object-fit:cover;width:234px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Photo_MariaD.jpg 872w, https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Photo_MariaD-221x300.jpg 221w, https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Photo_MariaD-754x1024.jpg 754w, https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Photo_MariaD-768x1043.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 872px) 100vw, 872px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m happy to see that the results of my research have caught the attention of my peers around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Maria Dekermenjian<\/strong>, INRS Ph.D. graduate in energy and materials science<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her paper, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/2023\/ra\/d3ra04492k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Raman spectroscopy investigation of magnesium oxide nanoparticles<\/a>,\u201d deals with the Raman properties of magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles in physical chemistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to theory, MgO cannot produce a Raman signature on its spectrum. However, spectroscopists have been observing Raman peaks on MgO nanoparticles for decades. The article explains and definitively resolves this contradiction by identifying surface contamination due to the presence of moisture and atmospheric carbon dioxide. Maria Dekermenjian\u2019s doctoral work focused on this apparent contradiction in the scientific literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After completing a bachelor\u2019s degree in physics at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umontreal.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al<\/a>, Maria Dekermenjian pursued a master\u2019s degree in physics in Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/chimie.umontreal.ca\/repertoire-departement\/professeurs\/professeur\/in\/in14686\/sg\/Richard%20Martel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Richard Martel<\/a>\u2019s group at the Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al. Her thesis focused on the far-infrared optical properties of carbon nanotube films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Driven by the desire to further her knowledge of nanotechnologies and hone her research skills, Maria began her doctoral studies at INRS\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/inrs\/research-centres\/energie-materiaux-telecommunications-research-centre\/\">\u00c9nergie Mat\u00e9riaux T\u00e9l\u00e9communications Research Centre<\/a> in Andreas Ruediger\u2019s group, co-supervised by Professor Alexandre Merlen from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.univ-tln.fr\/-University-of-Toulon-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Toulon<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThanks to my studies at INRS and the support of my research supervisors, I was able to push the boundaries of current knowledge in my field,\u201d enthuses Maria, who successfully defended her thesis \u201c\u00c9tude de nanoparticules d\u2019oxyde de magn\u00e9sium par spectroscopie Raman\u201d in April&nbsp;2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\"
