For the first time ever, single-exposure 2D optical imaging of ultrafast demagnetization is now possible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-already-having-an-impact-in-science-and-beyond-nbsp\">Already having an impact in science and beyond&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The INRS 2025 Prix Plan\u00e8te selection committee was impressed by the recognition this innovation has already garnered, including publication in <em>Nature Communications<\/em> and selection as one of the 10 top discoveries of 2024 by <em>Qu\u00e9bec Science<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This ultrafast camera opens up a world of possible applications in multiple fields and many opportunities for future collaborations, which also caught the attention of the selection committee. It could help advance knowledge in modern physics, biology, chemistry, materials science, and engineering. These advances could be used to create better pharmaceuticals and medical treatments and improve the mechanical properties of materials.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, SCARF promises economic spinoffs, as two companies\u2014Axis Photonique and Few-Cycle\u2014are working with Professor Liang\u2019s team to develop a marketable version of the discovery, whose patent is currently pending.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI strive for excellence in research, but I also seek to transfer technology so that it can contribute to Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s socioeconomic development, for example in biomedical applications such as fever detection or cancer diagnosis. I hope that our work will improve public health and save lives while strengthening Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s leadership in the photonics industry.\u201d\u2009&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Jinyang Liang<\/strong>, professor at the INRS Centre \u00c9nergie Mat\u00e9riaux T\u00e9l\u00e9communications, scientific director of the Applied Computer Imaging Laboratory, Canada Research Chair in Ultrafast Computer Imaging, and co-holder of the INRS Chair in Nanobiophotonics<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Recognizing faculty members\u2019 contributions to the economic, social, and cultural development of society&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Prix <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/linrs\/prix-et-distinctions\/prix-planete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Plan\u00e8te<\/a> celebrates individual or collaborative contributions by faculty members to pursuing the three main pillars of INRS\u2019s mission: fundamental and applied research, graduate training and education, and knowledge and technology transfer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Achievement in Research Award celebrates a major scientific accomplishment whose quality, scope, innovative nature, impact on the advancement of knowledge, potential benefits to society, renown, or significance to INRS are remarkable.
