It paves the way for my return to doctoral studies at a leading research institution.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite><strong>William-Jacomo Beauchemin<\/strong>, PhD student at INRS<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-understanding-male-fertility-in-the-age-of-environmental-pollutants\">Understanding male fertility in the age of environmental pollutants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paloma da Cunha de Medeiros, a PhD student in Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/daniel-g-cyr\/\">Daniel Cyr<\/a>\u2019s lab at the <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/inrs\/research-centres\/armand-frappier-sante-biotechnologie-research-centre\/\">INRS-Armand-Frappier Sant\u00e9 Biotechnologie Research Centre<\/a>, is tackling a critical public health issue: male infertility.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her project, <em>\u201cRegulatory Mechanisms in the Differentiation of Epididymal Stem Cells: The Role of Immune Cells in the Epididymis\u201d,<\/em> explores the interactions between stem cells and immune cells in the epididymis\u2014an organ essential to sperm maturation and male fertility.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She aims to understand how Halo cells\u2014a type of immune cell\u2014affect the differentiation of basal cells, a mesenchymal stem &nbsp;cell present at the base of the epididymal epithelium. Her innovative approach uses epididymal organoids to simulate an inflammatory environment, particularly one caused by nanoplastics\u2014tiny pollutants that are widespread in our environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her research could shed light on the causes of male infertility, which is on the rise both in Canada worlwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rethinking-intelligence\">Rethinking intelligence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">William-Jacomo Beauchemin is conducting a sociohistorical study on the concept of intelligence. Under the supervision of Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/christian-poirier\/\">Christian Poirier<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/inrs\/research-centres\/urbanisation-culture-societe-research-centre\/\">INRS Urbanisation Culture Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Research Centre<\/a>, he explores how this idea\u2014often seen as an individual trait\u2014has been shaped through modern history and various tools and systems of social regulation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His project,<em> \u201cIntelligence Under Pressure: A Sociohistorical Trajectory of a Modern Category\u201d,<\/em> seeks to understand how intelligence has been used to classify individuals, legitimize social hierarchies, and shape performance norms. Using interdisciplinary discourse analysis, he examines how the concept is used in theoretical texts, media, and public policy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also explores forms of resistance to dominant definitions of intelligence. By uncovering the historical roots of this category, his work contributes to contemporary debates on epistemic injustice and the challenges posed by artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Congratulations to Both of You!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-about-the-vanier-scholarship-nbsp\"><strong>About the Vanier Scholarship<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/vanier.gc.ca\/en\/home-accueil.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program<\/a> aims to attract world-class doctoral students to Canada and encourage them to stay.
