Develop cutting-edge environmental technologies to address the challenges posed by persistent contaminants and climate change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-inrs-chair-in-geophysical-monitoring-for-adaptation-to-climate-change\">INRS Chair in Geophysical Monitoring for Adaptation to Climate Change\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With climate change, coastal flooding due to rising sea levels is becoming more frequent and shoreline erosion is increasing. This threatens freshwater supplies and the integrity of infrastructure located near coastlines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/research-chairs-groups-and-networks\/find-research-chair-group-or-network\/chair-in-geophysical-monitoring-for-climate-change-adaptation\/\">INRS Chair in Geophysical Monitoring for Adaptation to Climate Change<\/a>, Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/bernard-giroux\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bernard Giroux<\/a> intends to improve geophysical analysis of coastal aquifers to better track saltwater intrusion. Geophysical methods play a key role in this but suffer from certain limitations.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Bernard Giroux<\/strong>, Professor, INRS&nbsp;<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research program therefore works on developing powerful, innovative measuring instruments, while focusing on diversifying application cases in the field so as to showcase the work and thus foster partnerships with research end users.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The computer codes and the design of the hardware platform that will result from the Chair\u2019s work will also be published in open access to promote their adoption in various fields of study and their use in other areas, such as landslide monitoring and mining.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-inrs-chair-in-new-biotechnologies-for-pfas-removal\">INRS Chair in New Biotechnologies for PFAS Removal\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are among the emerging contaminants of greatest concern for the environment. They are highly stable and persist in nature for a very long time. Used as stain-resistant, non-stick, and waterproofing agents and for their resistance to flames, these PFAS are found in many everyday products such as Teflon kitchen accessories, certain cosmetics and food packaging.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized is-style-rounded\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"865\" height=\"865\" src=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/RouissiT-e1671567609890-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-198186\" style=\"width:auto;height:260px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/RouissiT-e1671567609890-edited.jpg 865w, https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/RouissiT-e1671567609890-edited-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/RouissiT-e1671567609890-edited-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/RouissiT-e1671567609890-edited-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 865px) 100vw, 865px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Qu\u00e9bec, studies conducted between 2016 and 2021 by the Minist\u00e8re de l\u2019Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques detected these contaminants in the St. Lawrence River and in 10% of samples taken from water treatment systems. In 2023, they were detected in virtually all tap water samples from 376 municipalities across the province.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Led by Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/tarek-rouissi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tarek Rouissi<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/research-chairs-groups-and-networks\/chair-in-new-biotechnologies-for-pfas-removal\/\">INRS Chair in New Biotechnologies for PFAS Removal<\/a> therefore focuses on this problem of surface water contamination. The goal is to develop new approaches based on biotechnology to degrade these pollutants.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCanada, and Qu\u00e9bec in particular, is home to one of the largest reserves of freshwater in the world. Protecting this vital resource is therefore both a priority and a major responsibility for the scientific community.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Tarek Rouissi<\/strong>, Professor, INRS&nbsp;<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These two chairs support master\u2019s students by giving them the opportunity to work in a stimulating and inclusive environment, alongside leading specialists in the fields of geophysics and environmental biotechnology, and thus develop the skills needed to meet the challenges of tomorrow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>INRS launches two institutional chairs to address climate and environmental challenges.
