This new scientific group will support the development and use of environmental DNA (eDNA), an innovative tool for protecting species diversity.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year, Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/valerie-langlois\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Val\u00e9rie Langlois<\/a> of the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS), Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uqat.ca\/services\/personnel\/fiche.asp?Fiche=960026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hugo Asselin<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uqat.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec en Abitibi-T\u00e9miscamingue<\/a> (UQAT), and several partners secured financing from <a href=\"https:\/\/genomecanada.ca\/fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genome Canada<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/genomequebec.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genome Quebec<\/a> to set up this new consortium.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The TAQ will be a one-stop shop for access to standardized protocols, training tools, collaborative networking, and knowledge-sharing among the various parties&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Professor Val\u00e9rie Langlois<\/strong>, Director of the TAQ.\u00a0<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To achieve this, the TAQ will bring together stakeholders from across the province, with researchers, private and public organizations, and First Nations representatives expected to take part in the discussions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-environmental-dna-nbsp\">What is environmental DNA?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All living organisms leave traces of their DNA in the environment, which are then found in water, soil, and air. These traces are what scientists refer to as &#8220;environmental DNA.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With just a few liters of water collected from a given area, therefore, scientists can determine which species are present. By avoiding the need to interfere with or even capture species to detect their presence, eDNA offers a powerful and non-intrusive way to analyze biodiversity and ultimately ensure its conservation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n    \n    <div class=\"content-slider-ctn\">\n        <!-- Slider main container -->\n        <div class=\"swiper-container\">\n            <!-- Additional required wrapper -->\n            <div class=\"swiper-wrapper\">\n\n                <!-- Slides -->\n                                    <div class=\"swiper-slide slide-img\">\n                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Table-sur-lADN-environnemental-du-Quebec-2-1-1200x780.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n                                            <\/div>   \n                                    <div class=\"swiper-slide slide-img\">\n                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/ADN-environnemental-du-Quebec-4-1-1200x780.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n                                            <\/div>   \n                                    <div class=\"swiper-slide slide-img\">\n                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/kiosque-Adn-environnement-1-1200x780.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n                                            <\/div>   \n                            <\/div>\n            <div class=\"navigation-ctn\">\n                <div class=\"swiper-button-prev\"><\/div>\n                <div class=\"swiper-button-next\"><\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to this innovative technology, it is possible to detect the presence of invasive species, observe the effects of climate change on biological communities, and monitor changes in a natural area in real time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-better-regulating-human-actions-on-the-environment-nbsp\">Better regulating human actions on the environment&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a broader application, eDNA also enables informed policy decisions to be made on environmental protection and whether or not building permits can be issued in certain areas.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Through this initiative, Quebec is asserting its leadership in environmental innovation and contributing to the advancement of global scientific knowledge&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/linrs\/directions-et-services\/direction-scientifique\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Isabelle Delisle<\/a>,<\/strong> Scientific Director of INRS<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this reason, it is essential to establish province-wide standards pertaining to the use of this tool.
