What does it really mean to \u201cadapt\u201d a neighborhood to heavy rainfall, extreme heat waves, or the social vulnerabilities they&nbsp;exacerbate? The book&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulaval.com\/livres\/adapter-la-ville-aux-changements-climatiques-des-experimentations-de-concertation-a-montreal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Adapter la ville aux changements climatiques\u202f: des exp\u00e9rimentations de concertation<\/em><\/a>, published by&nbsp;Les&nbsp;Presses de&nbsp;l\u2019Universit\u00e9&nbsp;Laval, offers&nbsp;food&nbsp;for&nbsp;thought&nbsp;and&nbsp;suggests&nbsp;concrete actions to address these challenges.&nbsp;It is co-edited by Professor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/sophie-l-van-neste\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sophie L. Van Neste<\/a>&nbsp;and postdoctoral researcher H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Mad\u00e9nian from the&nbsp;Institut&nbsp;national de la recherche&nbsp;scientifique&nbsp;(INRS), both based at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/inrs\/research-centres\/urbanisation-culture-societe-research-centre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centre Urbanisation Culture Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Research Centre<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-living-laboratory-in-lachine-est\">A\u00a0living\u00a0laboratory in Lachine-Est\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The book focuses on a landmark case: the industrial brownfield of Lachine-Est in Montr\u00e9al. This vast 64-hectare&nbsp;property, which is&nbsp;slated to become an eco-district over the next 20 to 30 years,&nbsp;is&nbsp;being used by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/laboclimatmtl.inrs.ca\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Labo Climat Montr\u00e9al<\/a>&nbsp;as a true living laboratory. It&nbsp;provides&nbsp;an opportunity to&nbsp;observe&nbsp;how adaptation can be integrated&nbsp;into urban development&nbsp;from the very outset&nbsp;through&nbsp;green infrastructure&nbsp;and by paying special heed to&nbsp;local&nbsp;issues&nbsp;and social needs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Divided into three parts\u2014transforming urban governance, urban planning, and urban intervention\u2014the book&nbsp;demonstrates&nbsp;that adaptation&nbsp;is about more than just&nbsp;technical solutions such as roads or water&nbsp;systems.&nbsp;True adaptation&nbsp;must include&nbsp;a&nbsp;social dimension.&nbsp;For instance,&nbsp;heat waves disproportionately affect people living in poverty and precarious housing. That means&nbsp;thinking about&nbsp;what makes people vulnerable and how they can be helped, to avoid the trap&nbsp;of green gentrification whereby&nbsp;ecological transition&nbsp;exacerbates&nbsp;social inequalities and excludes&nbsp;local communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Lachine-Est project&nbsp;is a way&nbsp;to integrate climate adaptation&nbsp;from the start when planning&nbsp;a neighbourhood.&nbsp;When we take the time to reflect&nbsp;on infrastructure and social needs, we can build communities&nbsp;that protect the most vulnerable and&nbsp;account for&nbsp;future challenges.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<cite><strong>H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Mad\u00e9nian<\/strong>,\u00a0a\u00a0postdoctoral researcher in urban studies\u00a0<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-power-of-public-consultation\">The\u00a0power of\u00a0public\u00a0consultation\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the heart of the book lies the idea that adaptation requires experiments in public consultation. This&nbsp;means&nbsp;creating&nbsp;opportunities for&nbsp;people&nbsp;who do not usually work together\u2014research teams, municipal services, community organizations, citizens\u2014to&nbsp;engage in dialogue, share&nbsp;expertise, and&nbsp;come up with&nbsp;solutions&nbsp;together. According to the authors, collective intelligence&nbsp;like this&nbsp;helps avoid blind spots, such as focusing too narrowly on stormwater management while neglecting inequalities linked to extreme heat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis book shows that&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;a mistake to think only institutions can address&nbsp;climate&nbsp;issues.&nbsp;Adaptation&nbsp;must be inclusive and participatory, bringing diverse knowledge&nbsp;to the table&nbsp;and&nbsp;giving&nbsp;voice&nbsp;to people&nbsp;who are&nbsp;often left&nbsp;unheard,&nbsp;in order to&nbsp;build sustainable and&nbsp;equitable&nbsp;neighbourhoods.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Sophie L. de Montr\u00e9al, and INRS, as well as from Montr\u00e9al municipal services and community organizations such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/grame.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GRAME<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.concertactionlachine.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Concert\u2019Action Lachine<\/a>,&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a
