How is it collected? And why is it becoming an essential tool for protecting our ecosystems? To answer these questions, Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/valerie-langlois\/\">Val\u00e9rie Langlois<\/a> of Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS), together with her research team, has published <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.puq.ca\/catalogue\/livres\/decoder-nature-5212.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">D\u00e9coder la nature : L\u2019ADN environnemental au service de la biodiversit\u00e9<\/a><\/em>, released by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.puq.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Presses de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec (PUQ).<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEnvironmental DNA is now stepping outside the laboratory and becoming a true decision\u2011making tool. I wanted to write this book to make this science accessible to everyone and to encourage citizens to use it to help preserve our ecosystems.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Val\u00e9rie Langlois<\/strong>, Professor at INRS and Environmental Toxicology Specialist<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An internationally recognized researcher based at the <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/inrs\/research-centres\/eau-terre-environnement-research-centre\/\">INRS Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre<\/a>, Val\u00e9rie Langlois holds a <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/news\/1-4-million-to-study-endocrine-disruptors-in-depth\/\">Canada Research Chair <\/a>and has spent more than twenty years studying how pollution transforms our ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-like-in-forensic-investigations-but-for-nature\">Like in forensic investigations\u2026 but for nature<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crime\u2011scene TV shows have long showcased the importance of collecting and analyzing human DNA to solve investigations. Environmental DNA works in a similar way\u2014except that it reveals crucial clues about ecosystems. Just as human DNA can linger on an object even after a person has left, environmental DNA provides information about organisms that pass through or inhabit a given area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A simple sample of water, air, or soil can reveal which species are present\u2014<strong>without disturbing<\/strong> plants or animals. No crime committed here!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-helping-the-public-discover-a-powerful-tool\">Helping the public discover a powerful tool<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Communicating complex scientific concepts is no simple task\u2014except, perhaps, for Professor Langlois, who has mastered the art through her <a href=\"https:\/\/editionsmultimondes.com\/livre\/prof-planete-et-sa-brigade-mission-sauvetage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">science books for children.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure Castonguay, Julie Couillard, Fidji Sandr\u00e9<\/strong>, and <strong>Tuan Anh To<\/strong>, she offers the general public an opportunity to discover environmental DNA\u2014a captivating, useful, and widely relevant tool.<br>Already, this approach is being adopted by government ministries, the mining industry, environmental organizations, and Inuit and First Nations communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-choosing-the-right-words-and-opening-the-right-doors\">Choosing the right words\u2014and opening the right doors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the team, contributing to the book was a true exercise in science communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cContributing to this book was a stimulating challenge: we had to find the right words to explain molecular biology to a broad audience. The experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and reminded me that science is everywhere\u2014and accessible when we explain it clearly.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Julie Couillard,<\/strong> Research Brochu, who also helped write the book, highlights the importance of sharing research with the public:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cScience communication has always been central to my path. For me, doing research also means sharing our knowledge with the public. Contributing to a collective book like this is a rare and meaningful opportunity to do just that.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Marie\u2011Pier Brochu<\/strong>, PhD Candidate in Water Sciences, INRS<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-environmental-dna-used-for\">What is environmental DNA used for?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Environmental DNA allows us to take the pulse of nature. By analyzing tiny traces left behind by plants, animals, and microbes, researchers can understand how an ecosystem is doing and how it reacts to its surroundings\u2014pollution, climate change, land use, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This method offers a fresh perspective on what is happening within an ecosystem: it can reveal when a species is becoming too dominant, when a disease is emerging, or how certain populations respond to changes in their habitat. Such insights help scientists and decision\u2011makers act more quickly and effectively\u2014protecting vulnerable species, restoring damaged environments, and better grasping how diseases circulate in nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, environmental DNA provides a powerful scientific tool to understand, monitor, and protect biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
