{"id":83115,"date":"2021-12-08T09:28:00","date_gmt":"2021-12-08T14:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/?p=83115"},"modified":"2021-12-20T09:08:08","modified_gmt":"2021-12-20T14:08:08","slug":"artificial-intelligence-at-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/news\/artificial-intelligence-at-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Artificial intelligence at work"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Algorithms, machine learning, and automated systems have revolutionized the world of work, and given rise to a whole new set of social issues.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n    \n<div class=\"wp-block full-width-image fixed-height\">\n    <div class=\"image-ctn\">\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/IA-Travail-Web-PL.jpg\" alt=\"Automated system industry\" \/>\n    <\/div>\n    <p>The use of algorithms, machine learning, and automated systems in businesses has grown by nearly 300% in the last five years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">The Qu\u00e9bec economy has gone digital in recent years, a shift that has led to a collective reflection on the effects of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace and the ethical questions it raises. <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/mircea-vultur\/\">Mircea Vultur<\/a>, a professor at Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) and a <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/actualites\/mircea-vultur-nomme-sur-un-comite-du-gouvernement-du-quebec\/\">member<\/a> of the multidisciplinary committee of experts convened by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ethique.gouv.qc.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Commission de l\u2019\u00e9thique en science et en technologie<\/a><strong>, <\/strong>has been studying this shift and its attendant issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe use of algorithms, machine learning, and automated systems in businesses has grown by nearly 300%! It is critical that we consider the social implications of these changes.\u201d<\/p><cite><strong>Mircea Vultur<\/strong>, expert specializing in work and professional integration<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vultur points to the competitive advantages and increased productivity afforded by AI, but also its dangers. His research focuses primarily on the ethical problems that arise from the adoption of AI, which has accelerated three trends in the world of work that predate the pandemic\u2014telework, the use of digital platforms and e-commerce, and industrial automation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the arrival of algorithms in human resources management, companies can now monitor employee productivity remotely. As a result, telework is more likely to be used in situations where algorithmic management allows for precise monitoring of working hours and even employee movements. \u201cThis practice can lead to over-monitoring. There is a real risk of overstepping the boundary between work and private life. Furthermore, companies need to be transparent about the data they\u2019re collecting on their employees, as many people aren\u2019t necessarily aware of all the ways AI is being used in management,\u201d Vultur says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to businesses that primarily operate on digital platforms, such as the ridesharing company Uber, issues surrounding working conditions arise. \u201cWhen you\u2019re working alone, it can be a real challenge to organize collectively to ask for better benefits or working conditions,\u201d Vultur says. Studies have shown that people in these types of jobs feel pressure to be constantly connected and available, so they, ofen have trouble logging off. \u201cAlgorithms create a high level of dependency, so workers effectively become subjugated by the platform,\u201d he adds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>Digital skills<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In industrial automation, artificial intelligence has led to some radical changes. Where the Industrial Revolution saw machines replacing physical labour, today we are seeing cognitive work replaced by information processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will such automation lead to the loss of even more jobs? On this front, Vultur is optimistic. \u201cI think what we\u2019ll see is a change in the nature of jobs. Instead of physically performing the work themselves, people will assist a machine. So there\u2019ll be a need for workers to develop new skills, more analytical than physical,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, the development of artificial intelligence poses a challenge for Qu\u00e9bec, whose economy is based mainly on small- and medium-sized businesses. Unlike large companies, these businesses need help from external resources to develop this kind of expertise. This challenge is also compounded by a shortage of skilled workers in all digital fields. \u201cThere simply aren\u2019t enough candidates out there, so demand is very high for people with these skills,\u201d Vultur notes. \u201cThe digital workforce also has a very high rate of turnover. Only 20% of people stay in the same organization for more than a few years. Skilled workers are spoiled for choice, so they\u2019re going to take the jobs that offer the best benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"content-page-list-ctn\">\n    <h4 class=\"title\">We suggest
