{"id":87012,"date":"2022-01-18T13:19:58","date_gmt":"2022-01-18T18:19:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/?p=87012"},"modified":"2022-01-18T13:20:01","modified_gmt":"2022-01-18T18:20:01","slug":"road-accidents-what-about-those-who-work-on-the-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/news\/road-accidents-what-about-those-who-work-on-the-road\/","title":{"rendered":"Road accidents: what about those who work on the road?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Quebec research provides solutions for training and prevention for pedestrian workers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n    \n<div class=\"wp-block full-width-image \">\n    <div class=\"image-ctn\">\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/AgentCirculation-Web-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>\n    <\/div>\n    <p>A new study provides a better understanding of the determinants and circumstances of road accidents in the workplace, particularly among police officers who deal with foot traffic and road traffic controllers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">Highway construction workers, public works department workers, school crossing guards, delivery people&#8230; These professions constitute a subgroup vulnerable to road accidents in the workplace; yet there is little scientific research on them. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irsst.qc.ca\/media\/documents\/PubIRSST\/R-1143-fr.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a> led by Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/marie-soleil-cloutier\/\">Marie-Soleil Cloutier<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/\">Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS)<\/a> provides a better understanding of the determinants and circumstances of road accidents in the workplace, particularly among police officers who deal with foot traffic and road traffic controllers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe idea was to gain a better understanding of the causes of road accidents involving pedestrians workers as well as their experience in traffic; there is a lack of data, although they are often victims of serious accidents,\u201d says Professor Cloutier, who is also the director of the INRS&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laps.ucs.inrs.ca\/\">Laboratoire pi\u00e9tons et espace urbain (LAPS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>Predominant accident factors<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This research funded by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irsst.qc.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Institut de recherche Robert-Sauv\u00e9 en sant\u00e9 et en s\u00e9curit\u00e9 du travail (IRSST)<\/a> was carried out in collaboration with specialists from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulaval.ca\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Universit\u00e9 Laval<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polymtl.ca\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Polytechnique Montr\u00e9al<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thalesgroup.com\/en\/americas\/canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thales Canada<\/a>&#8216;s research and technology sector. It identified several factors associated with road accidents in the workplace. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWe found that driver distraction, reckless driving, and excessive speed were almost always involved in a road accident involving a pedestrian worker.\u201d<\/p><cite><strong>Marie-Soleil Cloutier<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, \u201calmost half of these accidents occur on commercial streets and, not surprisingly, the greater Montreal area is where most accidents occur,\u201d adds the road safety researcher. \u201cHowever, most serious accidents tend to occur outside the city, on roads with higher speed limits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To reach these conclusions, the team undertook an extensive analysis of existing matched data from the SAAQ and CNESST, including nearly 900 accident reports that occurred between 2000 and 2016 involving at least one pedestrian worker. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>A poorly secured work environment \u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team also studied work environments through data collection on approximately 40 sites. They focused on the field experience of a cohort of 19 police officers who deal with traffic on foot by conducting in-person and video observations. The team also conducted additional interviews with three road traffic controllers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the measures evaluated by the scientists is the level of stress reported and experienced by police officers when they are in traffic. For this purpose, sensors measuring their respiratory rate were used.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The data collected revealed that it is higher when they work in a dense urban environment, with more traffic and a diversity of road users (pedestrians, cyclists, motorists).<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These same sites that were considered \u201ccomplex\u201d were also associated with lower levels of safety based on traffic safety indicators from the video analyses. These sites were generally characterized by more dangerous interactions between pedestrian workers and vehicles, shorter distances between them, and higher speeds by vehicles passing near workers.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIt would be interesting, for example, to offer specific training in the management of complex sites, i.e. sites with several types of road users and a lot of traffic.
