The start-up\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ki3photonics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ki3 Photonics<\/a>, launched by students of Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/roberto-morandotti\/\">Roberto Morandotti<\/a> of the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS), has decided to tackle some of them. The team is collaborating with the start-up company <a href=\"https:\/\/qubridge.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Quantum Bridge Technologies<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their work focuses on entanglement, a phenomenon that occurs when two or more particles share the same quantum state, regardless of the distance between them. The generation and control of entangled particles are critical to future quantum technologies and the deployment of large-scale networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>Pushing the limits<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The funding of more than half a million from the Air Force Research will further the understanding of how the creation and manipulation of large quantum systems can be scaled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWe\u2019re honoured to receive this support, which we\u2019ll use to quantify the advantages and limitations of large quantum states for quantum photonics infrastructures.\u201d<\/p><cite><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nonlinearphotonics.com\/team\/yoann-jestin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yoann Jestin<\/a><\/strong>, cofounder of Ki3 Photonics<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Physicist and INRS graduate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nonlinearphotonics.com\/team\/stefania-sciara\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stefania Sciara<\/a> works alongside Yoann Jestin and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nonlinearphotonics.com\/team\/piotr-roztocki\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Piotr Roztocki<\/a>, also cofounder of Ki3 Photonics. She is particularly interested in large quantum states, which are necessary to increase communications distances. \u201cIt would not be an exaggeration to call such states the holy grail of the field,\u201d says the <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/actualites\/un-franc-succes-pour-la-collation-des-grades-de-linrs\/\">recipient<\/a> of the Governor General\u2019s Academic Gold Medal and the Director General\u2019s Award for Excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Piotr Roztocki, winner of the <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/news\/piotr-roztocki-wins-2020-paul-baran-young-scholar-award-for-his-innovative-work\/\">2020 Paul Baran Young Scholar Award<\/a>, points out the limitations of human-based quantum investigations. \u201cWe just aren\u2019t equipped to think in the high dimensions these states occupy. Computers are. Which is why we\u2019re targeting a framework that combines recent advances in learning and optimization towards these hard problems we\u2019re facing.
