Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/erwan-gloaguen\/\">Erwan Gloaguen<\/a> of Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) and his research partners decided to focus on developments in this field  by adapting existing deep learning architectures to interpret data from airborne imagery and geophysics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In studying vast, hard-to-access areas, geologist often have to interpret airborne geophysical data. Computer tools are invaluable for analyzing airborne images of these sites and generating a useful preliminary interpretation for geologists. Several neural networks used in artificial intelligence have already proven highly effective for analyzing conventional photographs or videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project, funded by <a href=\"https:\/\/frq.gouv.qc.ca\/en\/nature-and-technologies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fonds de recherche du Qu\u00e9bec \u2013 Nature et technologies<\/a> (FRQNT), in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quebec.ca\/en\/government\/ministere\/energie-ressources-naturelles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Minist\u00e8re de l&#8217;\u00c9nergie et Ressources naturelles<\/a> (MERN), under its second sustainable mining partnership research program, will analyze several types of airborne image data to predict the nature of the subsoil. The algorithms generated can be used as guides to target mineral exploration sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><strong>Parallel neural networks<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This new approach to artificial intelligence aims to train parallel neural networks, each processing one type of variable, such as magnetic or electromagnetic data. When processing is complete, a system will combine each of the network\u2019s predictions to generate a final prediction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professor Gloaguen\u2019s team is working with experts in artificial intelligence applied to mining for this network development project, the first phase of which is already underway. Team collaborators include Professors <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/bernard-giroux\/\">Bernard Giroux<\/a> et <a href=\"https:\/\/inrs.ca\/en\/research\/professors\/pierre-simon-ross\/\">Pierre-Simon Ross<\/a> at INRS, Martin Blouin at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geolearn.ai\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Geolearn<\/a> (an INRS startup), Jean-Philippe Paiement at <a href=\"https:\/\/mirageoscience.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mira Geoscience<\/a>, Guy Desharnais at <a href=\"https:\/\/osiskogr.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Osisko Gold Royalties<\/a>, and Antoine Cat\u00e9 at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.srk.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SRK<\/a>. Carefully upgrading them in higher resolution is essential, since the data isn\u2019t standardized,\u201d explains Professor Gloaguen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the second year of the project, the team will build a deep network architecture and train it to recognize geophysical data, a step that will take several months. In the third year, the team will assess the potential for generalizing the algorithm. \u201cWe\u2019ll be testing the system to see if it can be generalized to all of Quebec or if it will need to
