Research interests

Pr Girard is director of the research in inflammation and physiology of granulocytes laboratory. His works focus on the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in activated neutrophils in response to diverse agents including cytokines, drugs, and several xenobiotics, aimed at better understanding and regulating inflammation. The identification of new molecules regulating several functions of neutrophils, key player cells in inflammation, could lead to the development of new therapeutic strategies for treating inflammatory diseases or related disorders. His research covers both in vitro and in vivo aspects of inflammation.

Dr. Denis Girard received both his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in biology from the Université du Québec a Montréal. His B.Sc. speciality was in experimental biology while his M.Sc. was in immunotoxicology. He then obtained a Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from the Université de Montréal while holding a FRSQ predoctoral award. He was working on the characterization of human autoantibodies such as anti-cytoskeletal antibodies. He then moved to the Centre Hospitalier (CHUL) de l’Université Laval for his post-doctoral training in the Department of Rheumatology and Immunology for about 3 years. He was awarded by the MRC/Arthritis Society joint program.

Dr. Girard was recognized for his work on interactions between some cytokines/receptors and the human neutrophil cells known to be implicated in inflammation. Particularly, he was the very first to find that interleukin-15 is a potent human neutrophil agonist. He recently obtained from the FRSQ a scholarship award and a setting up grant for young investigator.
