In this book, the author retraces his personal and professional journey in rural areas since 1969, combining family life, love of nature, and intellectual engagement. The book also offers reflections on the role of non-metropolitan regions in Quebec’s development and on avenues for solidarity between cities, rural areas, and metropolitan areas.

For INRS, this launch is in line with its mission and is part of the dynamic of its new center on sustainable rural areas in Charlevoix.

“At the age of 83, I felt the need to recount the intertwining of my academic, professional, and family life as experienced in a rural setting. Between the sheepfold, the fields, the lake, and the forest on the one hand, and the university, publications, and scientific missions on the other, an amalgam of joie de vivre, freedom, and accomplishment was forged. This atypical work combines scientific rigor and literary freedom, memories and reflections, to bear witness to a life entirely dedicated to the regions of Quebec and their ruralities. ”

Bernard Vachon, retired honorary professor at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and a leading figure in rural development in Quebec

This book serves as a reminder of the essential role of research and scientific reflection in informing public debate and building sustainable solutions for our communities. INRS is pleased to be the publisher and to see this book published at a time when we are developing a center dedicated to sustainable rural communities. ”
