Research interests

A review of the fundamental principles for the design of environmental technologies adapted to rural contexts.

Ex situ on-site and/or in situ treatment of contaminated groundwater and soil: In situ chemical oxidation (ISCO), gravimetric separation, passive treatment, and bioremediation.

Management, treatment, and local recovery of non-hazardous waste: source separation, sorting and packaging, reuse, and development of recovery pathways.

Characterization and monitoring of groundwater resources: Implementation of observation well networks and monitoring tools, sampling, characterization and monitoring, numerical modeling.

Management and treatment of drinking water and contaminated effluents: reduction at the source, treatment, and recovery.

Alternative energy sources: biomass boilers, micro-hydroelectric power, agrivoltaics, wind power, and surface geothermal energy.

Function and Biography

Vincent Taillard, Eng., Ph.D., holds a European engineering degree in materials engineering (France, Sweden, Spain), as well as a master’s degree in water sciences (2010) and a Ph.D. in Earth sciences (2021) from INRS-ETE, both of which were recognized with the institution’s Innovation Award. He possesses extensive expertise in the fields of contaminant hydrogeology and the development of customized environmental technologies.

His professional career includes ten years of experience in the environmental industry, where he led numerous R&D projects focused on soil and water remediation, as well as the design of mobile infrastructure for treating and valorizing contaminated materials. His experience as a researcher at a CCTT and as a research associate at INRS’s Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre has allowed him to acquire solid expertise in student supervision, research funding, and the management of inter-institutional collaborative projects.

As a professor specializing in technological innovation adapted to rural environments, Vincent Taillard’s research focuses on re-evaluating conventional environmental technology design principles to adapt them to rural realities. More specifically, he develops innovative, accessible, and resource-efficient solutions adapted to the specific contexts of rural Quebec, including First Nations and Inuit communities in Nunavik.

His medium-term goal is to provide local stakeholders with a suite of sustainable and affordable technologies. In the longer term, he aims to strengthen the autonomy of rural regions so they can independently deploy these innovations using local expertise and resources.

The originality of his scientific approach lies in its collaborative, intersectoral, and transdisciplinary nature. Direct involvement of local stakeholders from the design phase onward ensures the relevance of the technologies developed, while fostering social acceptance and long-term adoption across the territory.
