INRS hosts the Eastern Canada regional finals of the Three Minute Thesis competition

A dozen contestants gathered at the Research Center located at the heart of Québec City.

The Eastern Canada regional final of the Three Minutes Thesis (3MT) competition was held on June 7 at INRS for the very first time, bringing together contestants from 13 Canadian universities.

The event was organized by the INRS Graduate Studies and Student Success Service with the support of the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS).

Each year, this competition invites master and doctoral students to give a concise presentation of their research project to a lay audience in just three minutes, in English.

PhD student Mostafa Shagar represented INRS for the event. As a student in energy and materials sciences, Mostafa Shagar is working under the supervision of Professor Emanuele Orgiu, in collaboration with Professor Luca Razzari.

Science communication is something very dear to me and lies at the heart of doing science in the first place. If we are unable to properly disseminate the information we gain then there is no use in gaining that information at all.”

Candidates from different universities of Eastern Canada gathered for this new edition: Concordia University, de la Dalhousie University, de l’École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS), de l’INRS, de la Memorial University – Grenfell Campus et St John’s Campus, de Polytechnique Montréal, de St. Francis Xavier University, de l’Université de Montréal, de l’Université de Sherbrooke, de l’Université Laval, de l’Université McGill et de la University of Prince Edward Island.

The members of the jury were Brenda Brouwer, Ph. D., Provost and Vice-President Academic (interim) at the Laurentian University; Julie Coonrod, Ph.D., Professor of Civil Construction & Environmental Engineering Dean (interim) of the Anderson School of Management at the University of New Mexico; Noreen Golfman, Ph.D., ONL, Professor Emeritus, Department of English Memorial University St. John’s; de Marcus Lima, Brand Manager, Communications and Public Affairs Department at INRS; and Bryan B. Trudel, Dean of Studies at the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue.
