Overview

INRS and its joint research unit (UMR) with Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR) are seeking a professor of data science applied to sustainable development in Québec regions.

The successful candidate will be part of the joint research unit at UQAR and will report to the Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre faculty council. The joint research unit will include other professors from the Urbanisation Culture et Société Research Centre. The recruited professor will be part of a multidisciplinary environment including various UQAR entities. They will have an opportunity to play an active role in the development of a unique new research facility.


Main duties

  • Organize a research program around the development of smart digital tools for managing spatiotemporal big data, processing and analyzing data through machine learning and visualization, and giving regional economic development stakeholders better access to knowledge
  • Participate in education and training activities, particularly as part of the centre’s graduate programs, and help supervise students and research staff
  • Raise the profile of INRS both domestically and internationally

This position is part of the Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre’s scientific programming.

Joint research units (UMR) create and consolidate Québec interuniversity research and innovation hubs, particularly in outlying regions, through the concerted action of Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) and five partner universities in the Université du Québec (UQ) network. These interuniversity clusters focus on strategic, high-priority themes for Québec. Partner universities are Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC), Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR), Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT), Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO), and Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR).

Standard requirements and skill sets

  • PhD in a relevant field
  • Strong record of scientific production that demonstrates initiative and creative thinking
  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial abilities for securing research funding
  • Aptitude for multidisciplinary teaching and graduate student supervision
  • Ability to work within multidisciplinary teams and networks

Working language

The working language is French. Knowledge of English is required. Applicants who do not often communicate in French are strongly encouraged to apply. The selected applicant will be encouraged to perfect their knowledge of French during their first contract (three years, renewable after evaluation) and be given the resources needed to facilitate their learning.

Remuneration

According to the collective agreement in effect at INRS.
