Context and summary

The Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) is the only institution in Quebec dedicated exclusively to university graduate–level research and training. Our professors and students carry out world-class research. INRS is currently seeking a research professor for a tenure-track position. The successful candidate will collaborate with the multidisciplinary research program of the Centre Eau Terre Environnement (located in Quebec City) by bringing a recognized expertise in biotechnology with a specialization in agri-food and/or bioengineering. The Centre’s research team in environmental technologies benefits from advanced research equipment, including a $15M world-class fermentation laboratory with small- to large-capacity fermenters allowing the scale up industrial bioprocesses.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Develop, in line with the Environmental technology priority research axis of the Centre, a robust and innovative research program in bioconversion focusing on industrial bioprocesses. The research work should involve biotechnology and/or bioengineering for the development of new bioproducts (e.g. enzymes, biopesticides, bioplastics, biofuels), and bioprocesses aimed at the growing fields of agri-food, nutraceuticals, functional foods or the circular economy;
  • Fund research activities and laboratory equipment through external grants from public and private organizations or through industrial partnerships;
  • Participate in training activities, particularly within the framework of the Centre’s Masters and PhD programs and through the supervision of students and research staff;
  • Contribute to national and international recognition of INRS within its specialty fields.

Requirements

  • PhD degree in biological science, biotechnology, or chemical science, or in another field related to microbiology or chemical engineering;
  • Relevant postdoctoral experience or work experience in industry or governmental services;
  • Strong scientific publishing record illustrating leadership and innovation;
  • Excellent potential to conduct research that will be original and productive, bringing a valuable contribution to the training of graduate students, and position the incumbent to be recognized as an international leader in the field within the next 5 to 10 years;
  • Aptitude for mentoring at the Masters, PhD, and postdoctoral levels and for supervising research staff;
  • Entrepreneurial skills and ability to self-fund research;
  • Interest in working both on fundamental and applied research projects in partnership with industry.

Working language

French is the working language of the Institute. Knowledge of English is required. Candidates who do not commonly use French are strongly encouraged to apply. The selected candidate will be invited to improve their knowledge of French during their first contract (3 years, renewable after evaluation), and all necessary resources to achieve this will be provided.

Salary

In accordance with the collective agreement in effect at INRS.
