Biography

Professor Emmanuelle Bouchard-Bastien brings expertise in citizen engagement and participation in rural areas. Her research focuses on the interrelationships between societies and their environments in contexts of transition, transformation, or conflict. 

She is particularly interested in the social dimensions of rural development projects and their consultative mechanisms, including mining, wind farms, and energy infrastructure. Her research also explores how communities respond to disasters, with a particular focus on recovery and adaptation processes. 

Before joining INRS, Professor Emmanuelle Bouchard-Bastien served as a senior scientific advisor at the Quebec National Institute of Public Health (INSPQ) from 2013 to 2026.

Current funded projects: 

EXPOsome and SANTé – Rouy-Norandian Cohort (EXPOSANT-RN).     

Pits and Tailings: The Legacy of Asbestos-Contaminated Mining Waste in the Social and Narrative Transitions of Thetford Mines and Val-des-Sources.  

Co-development and establishment of a sentinel surveillance cohort in Quebec livestock farms to improve preparedness for health crises.  

Portrait of the social and individual impacts experienced by a population living near a copper smelter: the case of Rouyn-Noranda. 

Completed projects as principal investigator: 

Study on psychological, social, territorial, and railway issues in Lac-Mégantic 10 years after the tragedy. A preliminary assessment of the bypass railway project. 

Implementation of alternative drinking water supply solutions: assessment of the social acceptability of three pilot cases. 

Ethnographic study tracking the individual and social effects of changes related to mining activities in Malartic: 2013–2020.
