Studying Advanced Functional Materials With Time-resolved Transmission Electron Microscopy

Project Description

In this project you will uncover the transient dynamics of functional materials using a a dynamic transmission electron microscope. This instrument has the unique capability to follow irreversible dynamics by collecting a series of near-atomic resolution snapshot images. You will design and carryout some of the first experiments using the microscope to study photoactive materials driven through phase transformations by ultrafast laser pulses. In the process, you will gain technical experience with advanced electron microscopy, ultrafast laser optics, and thin film synthesis. These studies will address impactful questions concerning the behavior of materials considered for next-generation electronic devices. Through this work, you will obtain a cutting-edge industrial perspective and a number of transferrable high-tech skills.

Required qualifications

  • The candidate must have a Master’s degree in a physical science, such as Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or Mechanical Engineering;
  • Experience with ultrafast lasers, optics, or electron microscopes is desired;
  • Candidates with experience simulating laser matter interaction by finite element simulations such as COMSOL are also encouraged to apply.
