Recognition of acquired competencies (RAC) in or out of school

RAC is a process that can be undertaken by anyone admitted to any INRS program. It allows students to apply to an INRS program the knowledge and skills they have acquired at a recognized university-level institution or the learning they have acquired in a professional environment (extracurricular).

RAC allows students to be exempted from taking certain courses that teach knowledge they have already acquired during previous training, thus allowing them to concentrate on new learning.

Procedures

Recognition of prior learning is governed by the following rules:

  • Students must apply to the program director for recognition of prior learning as soon as possible.
  • Any proposal for recognition of prior learning must be recommended by the program director and approved by the registrar.
  • Courses and research activities that have already been used to obtain a degree are not eligible for prior learning assessment.
  • A maximum of six (6) credits from lower division courses may be recognised.
  • A course successfully completed in a program of study from which the student has graduated may be recognised by substitution if it is deemed equivalent to the courses in the program of study to which they have been admitted.
