Professor Vetrone is a scientist recognized internationally for his innovative research in the field of rare earth-doped nanoparticles (rare earths are a group of metals in the periodic table). His team studies nanoparticles whose optical properties are very useful for all sorts of applications in biomedicine. These nanoparticles are used to develop new tools for the simultaneous early detection and treatment of diseases such as cancer. Professor Vetrone’s work has led to a number of important discoveries in understanding the optical properties of nanomaterials, their production and applications, including nanomedicine.

“The discovery of the unknown is what inspires me. I like conducting fundamental research and especially finding ways to link the laboratory to real-world applications that can contribute to the common good.”
