Professor Jinyang Liang publishes a reference book for his field of specialization.

Coded optical imaging is a relatively new field of research that has been growing very quickly since its emergence in 2010. Despite that, there has been no reference work on the subject until now.
INRS Professor Jinyang Liang, a specialist in ultrafast imaging and biophotonics, set out to fill this gap in the scientific literature. His efforts have borne fruit—his book, Coded Optical Imaging, releases this spring from Springer Publishing.
Compiled under his direction, the substantial volume brings together the work of 104 authors from 12 different countries. It offers a comprehensive view of advances in coded optical imaging, its history, and its fundamental concepts, as well as recent breakthroughs in the field.
Coded optical imaging has broad applications for a variety of fields of study, including physics, chemistry, biomedicine, materials science, artificial intelligence, and metrology. Given its extremely wide range of uses, the discipline is rich in possibilities. This new book meets a clear need for scientific references.
Professor Liang embarked on this major project three years ago, at the height of the pandemic. “I wanted to create a book that could be used by both seasoned and up-and-coming researchers,” explains the expert. “In fact,” he adds, “certain chapters of Coded Optical Imaging are designed to be adapted for the purposes of teaching optics and photonics.”
Today, he hopes that this new book will be useful to readers in fields ranging from computer imaging and optical engineering to computer graphics and image reconstruction techniques.
The articles are divided into 37 chapters totalling over 700 pages, illustrated with over 380 diagrams and images.
Professor Liang emphasizes the enthusiasm of the colleagues involved in the project, both here and abroad. “Initially, each chapter was supposed to be a maximum of ten pages long. But all of the book’s contributors were intensely dedicated to the project, so much so that several chapters ended up exceeding 30 pages. Everyone was happy to share their knowledge and expertise with a wider audience.”
Coded Optical Imaging, published by Springer Publishing in March 2024, was edited and prefaced by Jinyang Liang, Professor at the INRS Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications Research Centre.
Professor Liang is also the Scientific Leader of the Laboratory of Applied Computational Imaging and holds the Canada Research Chair in Ultrafast Computational Imaging (tier 2).
