- Awards and Distinctions
One of the first INRS female researchers named for her outstanding achievements in the field of materials chemistry.
Professor Dongling Ma awarded Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in recognition of her significant contributions to the field of materials chemistry.
Dongling Ma, Professor at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) has been named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) in recognition of her significant contributions to the field of materials chemistry.
Fellows of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) hold positions of influence in the research community and have invaluable experience, expertise and commitment to promoting the value of Chemical science. She is one of the first female researchers at the INRS awarded FRSC.
“Being appointed Fellow from the Royal Society of Chemistry is a great honor and a prestigious distinction. I am thankful to be part of this community. I am proud to be recognized for the contributions that my team and I have been able to make at the INRS.”
Dongling Ma, INRS professor
Professor Ma’s current research focuses on developing new functional materials and structures at the nanoscale for energy, environmental, and biomedical applications such as solar fuels, photovoltaics, photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in environments, and bio-imaging and biodetection.
Recently, her work on the conversion of solar energy into fuel has been particularly noteworthy. It opened the door to more effective conversion of solar energy to fuel, in order to replace oil and gas.
In a letter supporting Professor Ma’s nomination, she is cited as “one of the most outstanding scientists and a leader in the field of materials chemistry and their applications.”
Dongling Ma joined the Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications Research Centre in 2006, soon after completing her PhD at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the United States. She is a Full Professor and expert in nanomaterials at INRS in Varennes (Québec). She is the holder of the Canada Research Chair in Advanced Functional Nanocomposites and Scientific head of the Nanomaterials Chemistry and Advanced Optical Characterization Lab.
Professor Ma is known within the research community to be a dedicated teacher. She has contributed to training more than 50 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and young visiting scholars. As a result, her students and postdocs have received many awards, including the most prestigious postdoc award in Canada, the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship and the prestigious doctoral thesis award, the ACES-ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award. She has authored or co-authored more than 170 scientific papers in high-level journals. She is also a holder of five granted patents.
Last but not least, she was awarded the Clara Benson Award by the Chemical Institute of Canada in 2022 which is given every year to a woman scientist who has made a distinguished contribution to chemistry while working in Canada. An inspiring model for the next generation of leaders in science including female scientists in STEM.
Congratulations to Professor Dongling Ma!
Established in 1841, the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) is the oldest chemical society in the world with over 54,000 members across the world. Its mission is to advance excellence in chemical sciences. Fellow is the senior category of membership of RSC.
