Professor Tiago H. Falk, a leading expert in wireless multimedia communications at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS), has been awarded the prestigious C.C. Gotlieb Medal by IEEE Canada , the Canadian arm of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
This honour recognizes his significant and lasting contributions to the fields of multimodal human–machine interaction and user experience analysis and enhancement.
In line with its mission, IEEE Canada, annually recognizes exceptional Canadian researchers whose achievements have advanced technology, research, and service within the engineering community in Canada.
“It is a great honour to receive this award named after Calvin Carl ‘Kelly’ Gotlieb, the ‘father of computing’ in Canada, who also helped establish guidelines for responsible computing practices. This recognition reflects the impact of the research my team and I are conducting at INRS, contributing to safer, more sustainable, and more reliable human–machine interactions that improve the lives of Canadians.”
Professor Tiago H. Falk
Professor Falk, who joined the INRS Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications Research Centre in 2010, is the founder and director of the MuSAE and co-leads the INRS-UQO Joint Research Unit on Cybersecurity and Digital Trust. His research focuses on leveraging signal processing and artificial intelligence to develop the next generation of human–machine systems.
Earlier this year in March, Professor Falk was named an IEEE Fellow, a distinction awarded annually to less than 0.1% of voting members. He was also recently selected as the 2025–2026 Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society.
Tiago H. Falk also received the prestigious 2024 Synergy Award for Innovation in the University Partnerships category by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization. With thousands of members, it is dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. It also promotes knowledge and innovation in the fields of electrical engineering, electronics, and telecommunications.
Congratulations to Professor Tiago H. Falk!
