Containment level 3 laboratory

The containment level 3 laboratory is a state-of-the-art infrastructure dedicated to research on several high-risk pathogens in cell culture in infectious conditions resembling those during the diseases they cause. Moreover, our mission involves that this infrastructure contributes to the preparedness to future pandemics.

Containment level 3 laboratory is directed by Laurent Chatel-Chaix, INRS professor

Laboratoire de confinement 3 INRS

  • Certified by the Public Health Agency of Canada for manipulations with SARS-CoV-2 (the etiologic agent of COVID-19), West Nile virus, lymphocytic choriomeningitis mammarenavirus, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (the bacterium causing tuberculosis)
  • Upgrades are ongoing to expand our portfolio of studied group risk 3 pathogens to non-indigenous agents.
  • Cell culture suite including three biosafety cabinets, two CO2 incubators, conventional centrifuges and an MTX-150 ultracentrifuge from Thermo-Fisher (commissioning planned in fall 2024).
  • Microsteam liquid effluent decontamination unit from ABC Actini (ordered, commissioning planned in 2025).
  • Cytation 10 multimode plate reader from Agilent with confocal microscopy module and medium-throughput screening capacity (commissioning planned in fall 2024).
  • BD Rhapsody HT single cell analysis system to generate samples for single-cell mRNA sequencing (commissioning planned in 2025).
  • Possibility of service contracts and research contracts.
  • Possibility of access to the infrastructure by external users after theoretical and on-site practical training.
  • Testing of antiviral activity of small molecules and biologics.
  • Testing of novel viral inactivation methods.
  • Evaluation of the role of host genes and biological process in intracellular pathogen replication.
  • Institut national de la recherche scientifique.
  • Ministry of Economy, Innovation and Energy in the context of the « programme de soutien aux organismes de recherche et d’innovation, volet 4 : Soutien au financement d’infrastructures de recherche et d’innovation (PSOv4) ».
