Shared Services Laboratory

The Shared Services Laboratory have specialized laboratories as well as microscopy and sample preparation rooms. They provide users with quality material and technical support in a safe environment.

This facility features a full range of state-of-the-art instruments for analyzing water samples by colorimetry, spectrophotometry, fluorometry, scintigraphy, and chromatography, as well as organic compounds and trace metals in various matrices.

Equipment

The Shared Services Laboratories house instruments and equipment acquired through research grants by Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre faculty members in order to make optimal use of all laboratory resources, combining state-of-the-art equipment and experienced personnel.

In addition to the equipment described below, the Shared Services Laboratory includes a laboratory truck.

Analyzer of carbon and nitrogen in aqueous solutions

Description

Measurement of the different forms of carbon (organic and inorganic) and total nitrogen in aqueous solutions. For the analysis of total and organic carbon and total nitrogen, the sample is injected into a combustion furnace and the carbon is transformed into CO2, then it is measured by an infrared detector. In the case of total nitrogen, detection is by chemiluminescence. For inorganic carbon, the sample is injected into a cell containing an acid solution that converts the carbonates into CO2, which is then measured by the infrared detector.

Description

Simultaneous measurement of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulphur in solid samples. Measurement involves 2 steps: combustion at 1000°C followed by analysis of different gases using infrared detectors (carbon, hydrogen and sulphur) and a thermal conductivity detector (nitrogen).

Description

Simultaneous measurement of several elements (mainly cations). Concentrations from ppb to ppm can be measured depending on the element. The ICP-OES radial view has a lower sensitivity that the ICP-OPES axial view for most elements. However it is more robust and less affected by complex matrices.

Mills: agate and disc

Description

Two types of mills, one is made of agate, the other is a disc mill. The latter can be used to grind, cut, shear, shred, fiberize, pulverize, granulate, crack, rub, curl, fluff, twist, hull, blend, or refine.

Qualified staff

The Shared Services Laboratory are managed and operated by a highly experienced team. The lab manager is in charge of coordinating activities and supervising staff. He ensures that analytical methods are up to date and that laboratory safety rules and quality control procedures are followed.

A team of technicians helps develop analytical methods, train students, and perform most of the chemical and biological analyses required for research projects. They also maintain the equipment they are responsible for. The team also includes certified divers who collect samples and install equipment during field campaigns.

The Shared Services Laboratory have up-do-date safety equipment, and all staff are trained in first aid.

 

Availability

The Water Sciences Shared Services Laboratories are available to Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre faculty members, students, and staff for research projects. Interns from various academic institutions are also occasionally accepted.

Lab resources can also be used for external collaborations and R&D contracts. Contact us.

The Shared Services Laboratory have all the equipment required for the:

  • Analysis of water samples by colorimetry, fluorometry, spectrometry, scintigraphy, and chromatography, as well as organic compounds and trace metals in various matrices.
  • Elemental analysis of solid samples.

Most of the lab equipment was acquired through grants from the Canada  Foundation fo Innovation (CFI) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
