Project description
Cryptosporidium spp. are Apicomplexan parasites that primarily infect intestinal epithelial cells (IEC). While infections in immunocompetent individuals are typically self-limiting, in those with certain immune deficiencies, infection can be chronic and severe. The cytokine interferon-γ (IFN-γ) is crucial for control of Cryptosporidium replication, however, the mechanisms by which this occurs are not well understood. This project will use IEC organoid cultures and cell and molecular biology approaches to better understand cell-intrinsic control of Cryptosporidium.
