Project description
We are looking for a motivated student to undertake a master’s project focused on the development and optimization of a method to quantify the biopesticide Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) in aquatic ecosystems. This biopesticide is used to control mosquito populations in Quebec (Canada), but its potential effects on non-target aquatic communities remain poorly understood. This project represents a unique opportunity for a student to contribute to the understanding of the environmental impacts of biopesticides and to develop tools for the sustainable use of these products.
This project will include two main components:
- Analytical methodology: Develop an accurate and reproducible laboratory technique to detect and quantify Bti toxins (Cry and Cyt) in complex matrices such as water, sediments and biofilm (periphyton).
- Ecotoxicological studies: Study the impact of Bti on non-target aquatic communities, including algal biofilms, invertebrates and/or fish larvae, to better understand its ecological implications.
The laboratories are located at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) in the beautiful city of Québec (QC, Canada). The successful candidate will interact with a dynamic research team that includes several research assistants/managers, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
Advantages:
- Opportunity to work on a subject with high environmental and societal impact.
- Supervision within a dynamic and multidisciplinary research team.
- Acquisition of skills in applied ecotoxicology, environmental analyses and advanced techniques in biology.
