Master’s student Yingming Lai is recognized for his work published in the journal Laser & Photonics Reviews.
Under the supervision of Professor Jinyang Liang, the young researcher has been awarded the Relève étoile Louis-Berlinguet in April 2021 by the Fonds de recherche – Nature et technologies.
“It is an honor to accept this award. I would like to thank my research director, Professor Liang and all my colleagues for this work. I believe that this work will play an important role in observing ultrafast events in the UV spectrum. We will continue work in developing ultrafast optical imaging techniques.”
Yingming Lai, master’s student in Energy and Materials Sciences
The award, which recognizes research excellence, was presented to Yingming Lai for his work on the design of the world’s fastest UV camera. Through their groundbreaking research, conducted at the Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications Research Centre, the team was capable of recording photons in the ultraviolet (UV) range in real time.
“I want to congratulate Yingming on his well-deserved award! He is a diligent and creative student, who is highly productive in his research. I look forward very much to continuing working with him to advance the frontier of ultrafast optical imaging,” says Jinyang Liang
Compressed ultrafast photography (CUP) captures the entire process in unprecedented resolution. With an imaging speed of 0.5 trillion frames per second, it becomes possible to capture laser plasma generation, a phenomenon that is critical to inferring certain material properties.
“It always fascinates me when you can watch the fastest phenomenon in the universe in such great detail,” said Yingming Lai.
The paper, “Single-Shot Ultraviolet Compressed Ultrafast Photography,” was featured on the cover of the October issue of Laser & Photonics Reviews.
