The institution celebrates this symbolic milestone the year of its 55th anniversary

Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) student Juan Esteban Ossa Ossa has received his master’s degree in water sciences—the 4,000th diploma presented by the establishment since it was founded in 1969.

Juan Esteban has decided to continue his research at the school by pursuing a Ph.D. in water sciences.

Based at INRS’s Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre, his focus is on sustainable stormwater management in urban environments. More specifically, he is exploring the application of smart control systems to urban drainage infrastructure such as retention basins and sewer networks.

His research is particularly relevant to current events and municipal needs in Québec, given the intensifying rainfall and disasters linked to the climate crisis. “I hope to help reduce the risk of flooding, improve cities’ resilience, and make them more adaptable to extreme weather events,” says Juan Esteban, who already sees potential applications beyond the province. “On a global scale, the methods and results could be applied in other regions, creating a positive impact worldwide in the fight against environmental challenges.”

Juan Esteban Ossa Ossa was mentored throughout his studies by his two supervisors, Professors Sophie Duchesne of INRS and Geneviève Pelletier of Université Laval.

Alongside his research, Juan Esteban has also been involved in the INRS community as a volunteer mentor, an experience that has benefitted him greatly.

“Being a mentor has enriched my academic and professional career, and given me a deep sense of accomplishment and belonging to a vibrant scientific community. It was a great experience that I highly recommend, as it gave me an insight into the diversity of research subjects at INRS.”
