Two INRS sociologists are co-editing a book on the contemporary realities surrounding the job market for young people
Professors María Eugenia Longo and Mircea Vultur are co-editors of the collection Le travail des jeunes au XXIe siècle : État de la situation et nouveaux enjeux (Youth Work in the 21st Century: State of Affairs and New Issues) published by the Presses de l’Université Laval.
María Eugenia Longo, co-holder of the Chaire-réseau de recherche sur la jeunesse du Québec (CRJ), is interested in life courses, relationships to work, and employment-related policies. Her colleague Mircea Vultur, a member of the joint implementation committee of the INRS-UQAR joint research unit, specializes in issues surrounding professional integration and young people’s relationship with work.
This new book is a collection of original works by CRJ members. It is intended as a reference tool for researchers studying how young people fit into the job market, and the policies that surround them in our society.
“This book invites readers to see working youth in a different light thanks to original analyses that point to the development of new emerging sectors in today’s world of work, namely the digital sector, the green and social economy sector, and the entrepreneurial sector.”
Mircea Vultur, researcher in the socioeconomics of work and training
The collection furthers an interdisciplinary reading on the issue of youth work in Quebec and elsewhere in Canada and paints a picture of their place in today’s job market. What do young people expect from their employers in terms of the environment and social change? How do new generations relate to the world of work? What specific challenges do young immigrants face?
“This book updates debates and knowledge that were hardly discussed even twenty years ago. It shows the rapid nature of changes in the job market, and the strong reactivity of young people. It also crystallizes part of the body of research produced within the CRJ, bringing together both scientific issues and the concerns of unions, employers, support organizations, and the government, not to mention young people.”
