The Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) is the only institution in Quebec dedicated exclusively to research and training at the graduate level. In partnership with the community and industry, INRS is proud to contribute to the development of society through its discoveries and to contribute to training the next generation of scientists in the fields of the natural sciences & engineering, social sciences, and health. INRS was ranked 1st in Quebec and 2nd in Canada for its research intensity (funding received per faculty member), according to the Research Infosource ranking for the year 2019-2020.

In order to support the strategic development of INRS and its Energy Materials Telecommunications research Center (EMT), within the framework of their respective scientific programs, INRS-EMT invites applications to fill a regular professor position. The profile of the application must make it possible to submit an application for the Canada Excellence Research Chairs program. This program, Canada’s most prestigious research chair program, aims as much to attract the world’s top researchers to Canada as to support the next generation of leaders and integrate them into ambitious research teams. The amount associated with this CERC could be of a maximum value of $500,000 per year or $1,000,000 per year for a period of eight years (including 25% of the total value of the chair for indirect research costs) and will be established according to the needs demonstrated by the research program. This professorship is essentially research-based and is not conditional on obtaining the CERC. Researchers meeting the eligibility criteria for the CERC program .

Main duties and responsibilities

  • This professorship mainly aims to strengthen one or other of the research axes of INRS-EMT. The scientific program of INRS-EMT is deployed around the following six research areas: Area 1: Sustainable energy, sources and use; Axis 2: Nanomaterials and advanced manufacturing processes; Axis 3: Ultrafast and photonic science; Axis 4: Telecommunications; Axis 5: Biotechnology; and Axis 6: Numerical modeling of physical and cognitive systems. The four major current societal issues addressed by the research at INRS-EMT relate to 1) the economic development of Quebec and Canada; 2) energy transition; 3) digital transformation in relation to communications and information technologies; and 4) health.
  • The successful candidate must have a program that aligns with the CERC Program priorities and submit an application to the CERC Program in the 2022 competition.
  • The successful candidate must demonstrate the potential structuring effect of their program on the Centre’s research and development activities.
  • Establish an innovative and independent research program.
  • Ensure funding for its research program through external grants from public and private organizations as well as through partnerships with industry when required.
  • Establish collaborations with research teams already in place while developing or maintaining partnerships with groups outside INRS-EMT.
  • Although this position is essentially research-based, the successful candidate will participate in teaching and training activities, particularly within the framework of the Center’s graduate programs and the supervision of postdoctoral fellows and research staff.
