Professor Satinder Kaur Brar elected to College of New Scholars, Artists

Professor Satinder Kaur Brar of the INRS Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre was elected to the Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.With this appointment, her peers have recognized the excellence of her contribution in the field of environmental research and her expertise in value-added products and sustainable development. Professor Brar is part of the first cohort of scholars, artists, and scientists named to the College at a ceremony held in Quebec City on November 21, 2014.

“Over the past 15 years, Professor Brar has developed approaches combining green chemistry and biotechnology. Her goal is to unlock the potential of nature to obtain eco-friendly bioproducts with high market value. She contributes significantly to global research on strategic issues in bioconversion, emerging contaminants, and pollution control.”

A recipient of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ State-of-the-Art of Civil Engineering Award and Rudolph Hering Medal, Professor Brar is internationally known for her research aimed at converting and reusing waste for practical applications. In seeking ecological solutions, she focuses her research on technology development and transfer. Her work covers a wide range of areas, from the production of bioproducts from waste to the development of advanced food technology, and includes the production of enzymes for agriculture, medicine, and cosmetics, and the recovery of residual sugars in biorefineries.
