Geology and Geological Resources

The research teams are focusing on the discovery and sustainable exploitation of critical and strategic geological resources to support the energy transition.

In collaboration with the government and the mining industry, their work focuses on understanding the nature and origin of these resources and the surrounding rocks. They also study the mechanisms of resource formation and remobilization, such as lithospheric fluid flow and tectonic deformation.

• Assess deep geothermal resources in sedimentary basins, hydrothermal systems, and northern regions, and improve methods for assessing the geothermal potential of flooded mines.
• Conduct applied research on current challenges such as the microseismic monitoring of mines to develop software for the detection of this type of mining-induced event, and thereby assess mine safety and productivity.
• Study past volcanic eruptions to better anticipate the potential behaviour of active volcanoes and reduce the risks associated with future eruptions.

• Conduct research in deep geophysics and geology in order to detect mineralization and structures and extend the life of Quebec’s main mining properties.
• Increases knowledge of structural geology and tectonic systems.
• Develop geophysical tools to quantitatively characterize aquifer reservoirs.
