Le professeur honoraire Pierre Payment a développé une expertise unique dans le domaine de la microbiologie de l’environnement et de la santé publique. Ses travaux portaient sur les microorganismes pathogènes dans les eaux, sur leur élimination lors des traitements d’épuration et de potabilisation, et sur leurs effets sur la santé humaine.

Fonctions et biographie
Le professeur Pierre Payment a obtenu son Ph. D. de l’Université de Montréal en 1974 (Microbiologie et Immunologie, faculté de médecine). Ses études post-doctorales ont porté sur la virologie de l’environnement et sur les hépatites virales. Elles ont été effectuées à Houston (Texas) sous la direction du docteur Joseph Melnick, virologiste de renommée mondiale.
Depuis 1975, il est professeur à l’INRS-Institut Armand-Frappier où en plus de ses activités d’enseignement et de recherche, il a été responsable du Laboratoire de microscopie électronique et du Service de diagnostique virologique vétérinaire, de la valorisation de la recherche, du service de l’informatique, et directeur du Réseau de gestion de la propriété intellectuelle de l’Université du Québec.
Actif en microbiologie clinique et en microbiologie de l’environnement et il a participé aux activités de la CACMID (Canadian Association for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases) dont il a été le président, et dont il a organisé la réunion annuelle pendant 9 ans. Il est actuellement professeur honoraire à l’INRS.
