Abstract:
Space-time couplings in lasers are becoming a well-known and powerful tool to shape the behavior of laser intensity and therefore as well influence physical processes. Initially conceptualized on Gaussian beams, space-time effects are starting to be considered together with more standardized « structured light » to increase the dimensionality and sophistication of the resultant effects. This also moves the control from primarily the laser intensity to the electric field – increasing the complexity but also the potential utility. We will trace this path using mostly fully analytical solutions for laser propagation, and end in considering optical singularities that have a space-time nature to them.
Short Bio:
Spencer studied engineering and physics in Michigan and Texas before moving to Europe, pursuing at first laser-plasma acceleration and Terahertz generation. After getting exposed to structured light while working on developing characterization techniques, he moved towards describing new types of propagating beams, and eventually to his current work on structured light in general, optical singularities, and optical forces.
